I and my friends have this weekly game of playing cards. This has been done since before we graduated from college. For those that haven't heard, Twitter is a super-sweet medium where folks can glance into your life to see who you really are. This being said, it's a good idea to post "Tweets" about things that are going on in your life daily, as well as what you're doing and thinking about. Now, I'm not saying you need to document your entire life's story, but simple let people know when something worth posting surfaces. I recommend Tweeting articles and videos that are comical in nature or regular things that allow someone to look into your world.

The tweets that you post daily are very revealing about yourself and basically tell others if you have things in common or if you're just plain crazy! I've met several people that are interesting in outdoor sports, internet marketing, and people that have the same type of dog I do. It's pretty incredible with whom you can connect with in this form of social media

When navigating on Twitter, pay attention to what people are saying. If there is a question someone has posted, go right ahead and answer it. I know, at first it may feel like eavesdropping, but I assure you everything is fine. When viewing a Tweet that you want to comment on, don't think, just do it.

The Bing search engine is Microsoft’s foray into the search engine market. It is not their first attempt at creating a search engine though. In fact, the Bing search engine was developed from the Microsoft Live search engine. It is a powerful search engine which yields many relevant results for just about any keywords you enter.

The results obtained from Bing are typically quite useful. They are also well laid out with a list of results appearing in the main column of the results page. There are also subheadings, which feature related keywords and a few results for these related keywords. This feature is useful from a user’s perspective because it can help them find a wide variety of information for one subject rather quickly. The layout also clearly distinguishes results from sponsored sites by placing these results on the right hand sidebar under the column heading Sponsored Sites. The other keywords featured on the results page are listed at the top of the sidebar on the left hand side for easy navigation. There is also a list of related searches you can jump to for even more information.

The Bing search engine does not just let you search for relevant websites though. Like other popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo!, there is also the ability to search for keywords in specific categories. Some of these categories include images, videos, shopping, news, maps and travel. There is also a really cool visual search feature which lets you navigate through pictures which may be of interest to you. To use this feature you can either enter keywords or navigate through a series of categories until you find a photo of interest to you.

Although Bing might not be the most well known or the most popular search engine available, it is definitely worthwhile for website owners to monitor their rankings and take measures to attempt to improve their rankings. This is simply because it is a Microsoft product and many people are fans of anything Microsoft does and will utilise this search engine out of brand loyalty. However, it does not make sense to optimise for this search engine at the expense of more popular search engines, such as Google. For example, it would not make sense to make changes to your website simply to improve your Bing ratings if these same changes lowered your Google ratings.

Do you want to know a secret? The answer to the question in the title of this article is me. That’s right, I created Google. No, really, and so did you. You don’t believe me? Okay, maybe that is because you have already heard the story of how Google was created by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, PhD’s of Stanford University, and how the concept for Google was born of Page’s dissertation idea to investigate the mathematical properties at work online. It is truly a great story and Page and Brin do get the credit for creating the company known as Google, but they are not solely responsible for the popularity of the company. This is where you and I come into the picture.

Well, before we come into the picture I have to admit the marketing team at Google also played a significant role in the success of Google. While Page and Brin put together the concept behind the page rank system, it is their marketing staff who really helped to promote Google as the superior choice in search engines. The fact that Google produces reliable results is important, but there are other search engines out there such as Yahoo! and Bing that are also doing this, but they are not nearly as popular as Google.

Think about when your friend asks you the name of a song and you can’t think of the answer. Do you tell him to just DogPile it? Do you tell them to Yahoo! it? No, you are much more likely to tell him to Google it. That is because the marketing team at Google has done such an excellent job of branding this company that their name has come to mean search engine in the minds of many internet users. It is the first place many of them turn for any information they want.

Which brings us to why I created Google! Right, it wasn’t just me, you helped too. Page and Brin created the concept their marketing team promoted, but it is the users of the internet who embraced it so wholeheartedly. It seems to me that people who are thinking about taking paid surveys online should start thinking bigger. Just as with Internet marketing being a numbers game, taking paid surveys online is a numbers game as well. To make more money you need to change how you approach it.

1. Survey companies will pay you to give them your opinion. This form of consumer research is not new and in many ways is even more valuable than ever before.

This is true because survey companies can reach a larger number of people via the Internet than they ever could on the telephone or in a shopping mall.

There are plenty of companies you can take paid surveys for. The key is to join more than one survey company and then get a system in place to start taking these surveys.

2. It is going to take you a few minutes to complete a survey. It could take as long as one hour depending on what is involved.

How long the survey takes is based on your speed and the particular needs of the company requesting you to complete the survey. The more questions the survey contains the longer it is going to take you.

You may as well be prepared to spend some time completing the survey if you expect to make money taking them.

3. How much money can you make? I have seen surveys that only pay a few cents, some that pay a few dollars, and some that pay $50 or more once you complete it.

You need to be done able to differentiate between paid surveys and surveys that pay you in points or prizes. There's nothing wrong with completing surveys and earning rewards for them, but if you need to make cash then that is the type of surveys you should concentrate on.

5. One final point to make is refer members and earn money on their completed surveys. If you are willing to spend a little time training people you can actually earn as much money referring people as you can taking paid surveys online yourself.

Domains that have been registered and never dropped are called "Aged Domains".

These domains normaly sell for more than a new one because they have been around for a while. They're usually out of the Google Sandbox and for those who are looking for aged domains, it can help them manage a living online, having a history, or raise credibility in their niche markets simply because if the domain has been around for years, it appears that they have as well.

Aged domains can also be found on forums like DNForum.com and simply by typing in the keywords "Aged Domains" into the search bar you can easily locate domain auctions that include these older domain names.

I have purchased dozens of domain names for $40 or less that were anywhere from 5 - 10 years old. Just based on the age alone I was able to flip these domain names for over 5x what I paid.

For instance, one domain name I purchased was never used, meaning it had never featured a website on it, it just sat parked in the users account for over six years.

I purchased the domain for only $30.00 and because of its age, I was able to flip it for $379.00.

That's quite a boost in profit from a domain I paid so little for.

While there is no exact science how to flip domains here are a few things to keep in mind:

1) Development Potential

When you analyze the availability of domains in your list, consider what each domain name could represent and be used for when creating a website presence.

First of all, let’s define Wordpress. It is a blog platform. At first glance, it’s attractive because Google ranks blogs higher than web sites. But that’s only under certain conditions.

There are two flavors of Wordpress: Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org. I’ll take each one in turn.

Wordpress.com

Originally, I was thinking that a few of my customers with really small sites could save hosting fees if they switched to Wordpress.com. I’m always looking for ways to save my customers money, especially now. But then I looked into it with the help of my very smart assistant and found out about all the limitations, and it just didn’t make sense.

Wordpress.com is a web application that you can use to start your blog or online presence. It requires no hosting platform, no downloading of files, and no programming. That’s the plus side. Unfortunately, the con side is huge: you cannot use your own URL or domain name (www.yourdomain.com). You are limited by what you can put on your site, including selling links. And you are very limited in formatting your blog.

Wordpress.com is good for these things: if you are running a hobby and not a business, if you want a personal or family blog such as for Christmas letters or to document the kids’ progress.

Wordpress.com has too many limitations for a serious entrepreneur.

Wordpress.org

Wordpress.org is a very robust programming application that you can download, load onto your hosting platform, and set up and use as a web site. Thousands of people are doing it.

You still need to pay a hosting fee. You don’t need to know HTML, but the application is so robust that there is a learning curve. If you are not technical at all, then you will need to hire someone who is technical to set it up for you. Someone – you or a contractor – will need to go through the learning curve.

It took me about 1-2 hours to download and load the Wordpress.org files to my web site. If you use GoDaddy as your host, the file load is automated. After you load the files, you’re ready to get your Wordpress site set up. The time it takes to set up varies on how many pages you have, what plug-ins and themes you want, and a myriad of other factors.

Wordpress.org is extremely flexible and there are many plug-ins that you can use to increase its robustness. One of the big benefits is that your web visitors can be much more interactive on a Wordpress site than they can on your web site. That’s a great reason to convert.

The next good reason to convert is the search engine ranking. If you’re setting up a new site, your rank will be higher than if you set up a web site. If you have an old site that is ranked highly, then you can move your URL to a Wordpress site and maintain the ranking. What you don’t want to do is start over with a new URL if your old URL has some years on it, because Google values age very highly.

If you have a huge site that you have not updated in a long time, then I don’t recommend moving to Wordpress. You need to be actively adding content in order to benefit from Wordpress. If your web content is very active, then it may make sense to move to Wordpress.

You can also add Wordpress on to your existing site, which is what I did. It causes my site to rank even higher than before (and I have a highly ranked site because it’s so old). Here is my Wordpress.org site so that you can get an idea of the layout:

Self Assessment or internal control is a regular process to be repeated again and again, as part of your efforts to reach the desired level of quality you are striving for. The self assessment process shows you if you are on the right track to achieve your goals, and it can also show you where you can find room for improvement in your working processes.

How to define the metrics.

What can you measure? Any working process in your department can be measured. Whether it is opening a new user account, setting up new a PC, ordering software, answering a call on the help desk - all these processes can be defined and measured. The way to do this is to set up a flow diagram, and define the working steps one by one until you have the defined the complete process. For each step in the process from beginning to end you should define the input needed to start the step, how the step is to be performed and finally, the result of the process. The process also involves defining 4 roles or levels of participation in the different steps of the process, execution defines the person who I doing the job, which normally means the person who is responsible. P for participation, who takes part in the process step, I for information, who, if any, needs to be informed about the result of the step. As you work your way through the process you are defining, make sure that all important steps to complete a process are included.

Have a special focus on the part of the process where you have little or no influence. Your interaction with other departments is important to measure, so define the steps where you need information from other departments or give information to other departments with great care. As an example, if you are defining how to open a new user account as a process, then you can have the following steps:

1) receive requisition for new user

2) crate new user on the network

3) Update user list

4) Update Hardware Inventory list

5) Update software licenses

6) Report back when everything is ready

If you in addition define the 4 levels of participation in the process, your procedure is ready.

How to do the self assessment / internal control. The self assessment is a process where you go through all the steps required to perform a task, step by step as defined in the procedure.

If the step is performed satisfactory, you have a situation that is called compliance. Compliance means that all is working well without errors.

If the step is not performed satisfactory, you have a situation we call non-compliance.Non-compliance means that there are some errors in performing the work, and these errors have to be corrected.

When you have compliance, you can complete your internal control. All is working well and according to procedure, just write a small report on your findings and send a copy to your immediate superior. Never forget the internal marketing you should do to improve your standings.

If you have a non-compliance situation, you will have to ask yourself the following questions: Are there errors in the way I perform the internal control? If you have errors in the way you do the internal control, it is easy to correct and then just repeat the process to see if your result is correct. Are there errors in the working procedures? A non-compliance situation may be a good indication. If the working procedure contains logical errors, people will bypass the steps you have defined simply because it prevents them from doing their job they feel it should be performed. After analyzing the situation and if you find errors in the procedure, correct the error, implement the procedure again and do a new self assessment. Are there errors in the implementation process? If the procedure is defined the way you want it to work and people do not follow it, then you have to consider your implementation process. Perhaps you have to repeat it, or discuss the steps where you have non-compliance with your subordinates so that they understand the importance of performing the procedure as described and not bypassing any of the steps. If there are errors in the procedure they have to be corrected, and a new training has to be done. If people bypass and the procedure works the way you want, a new training is also required. Self Assessment of your procedures is a very good tool to improve performance and verify that you keep the level you want.

More so, when you have a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with your users and you have to verify performance from time to time. Then self assessment becomes a part of your regular working routine and you can document your service level with your self assessment reports.

So far in my joint venture articles I've been working on the basis that you have (or soon will have) a product (or service) to sell. And you're using joint venturing as a way of linking up with a partner .... to make a few thousand (or maybe millions!) of pounds from selling it to their customers. Because that's the usual way JVing works. But it doesn't have to be like that.

You can make a ton of money from joint venturing even if you do not have a product or service of your own. In fact, it can be an even easier way of doing it, and you can make a lot more from it too!

How? By becoming a joint venture broker!

As a JV broker, putting these deals together for others, you will be partnering up businesses who may never have heard of each other before - getting them together in a JV deal and making money for both of them - while taking a nice cut of the profits for yourself too!

To operate as a JV broker you don't need anything more than you need to set up direct JV deals. If you have a PC, a phone and, perhaps, a set of phone books then you too can set up great brokered JV deals!

In the simplest terms, here is how Joint Venture brokering works:

1. Choose a JV product or service area that you would like to work in.

2. Research potential partners in exactly the same way as you normally would. I've covered this in several of my articles.

3. Do some checking to try and ensure you do not bring the wrong companies (such as direct competitors and obviously unsuitable partners) together!

4. Contact your prospects with a JV proposal. The only difference is that this time you need to send proposals to two parties instead of just one. Again, I've covered how to do this in several articles.

5. Spend some time educating your prospects on how participating in joint ventures is going to benefit them. Remember, they may not have seen a JV before.

6. Lastly, bring the partners together and sign the deal.

You can see that the steps are more or less the same as when putting together a deal in which you are one of the parties. Except that this time there are three parties not two with you acting as the man (or woman) in the middle.

What percentage of the profits should you take as a joint venture broker?

This is one of the most important aspects of being a broker. It depends on a few things:

* How much you want or need to make on each deal.

* How much of the profits the prospective partners are willing and able to pay you.

* How much work you do - if any.

* How fair - or ruthless - you want to be!

As a ball park figure, the standard brokerage commission is 10%. If this doesn't sound much remember that, if a typical JV deal makes £10,000 profit, then as a broker on 10% commission you would make £1,000. And remember, this is just for introducing the two parties. You don't have to do any of the work in marketing or fulfillment at all. If you were involved in just two deals a week you would still clear over £100,000 a year. And there would still be time to do direct JV deals of your own as well. Of course, if you do more work - such as helping with marketing etc. - you could make even more, perhaps up to 40% commission. Which would be £4,000 on a £10,000 profit .... well over £400,000 a year assuming two deals a week!

And it gets better. Normally with a brokered deal you would just charge one of the partners a commission - usually the one with the product or service to sell. But there is nothing to say that you can't negotiate a commission from both of the parties. You don't need to take the same cut from each partner here. You can charge each partner more or less depending on how keen they are to do the deal. And if you do more work for one partner than the other you would obviously want to take a higher percentage from that partner. Some deals will produce more than others. But the point is there is no easier way to make money than as a JV broker.

One last important thing here: Be sure that you don't share any of your JV ideas with any potential prospects before they sign a non disclosure agreement. Apart from ensuring that important commercial secrets don't get into the wrong hands it means that each partner won't be tempted to cut you out of the deal if they find out who the other partner is, but before the deal is signed. Most partners will be more than happy to do this, given the amount of money they stand to make. (I'll run through non disclosure agreements in another article.)

Once you become familiar with this process you can repeat it over and over again in more and more profitable JV brokering deals. In fact, once you build a reputation as a JV broker who can create profitable deals you should find that many businesses will actually come to you and ask you to find partners for them!

SCORM and the Learning Management System (LMS)

What actually is SCORM? SCORM, Shareable Content Object Reference Model, is a standard for web-based e-learning that has been developed to define communication between client-side content and a runtime environment. In the context of this article, the client-side content would be the course launched by a student and the runtime environment would be a Learning Management System. The SCORM standard has undergone several version releases from SCORM v1.0 in 1999 to the SCORM 2004 3rd Edition in 2006. The purpose of this article is to look in a little more detail at the communication flow between the LMS and a course that is SCORM v2.1 compliant. The intention is not to review every possible communication but just the main calls. We will look at SCORM in the context of a SCORM course, i.e. a course that has been developed and built to communicate with a Learning Management System using the SCORM standard.

First of all, let me define a few terms that I will use and that you may hear in reference to SCORM courses:

• API (Application Programming Interface)

The SCORM standard has a defined API. The term API is not unique to SCORM but is a well known term in application development. The SCORM API is a documented set of messages that are sent between the course and the LMS. The message may require a response so that the sender of the message is guaranteed that the message has been received and processed appropriately.

• Manifest

The manifest is the master file for the SCORM course that contains references to all other files that make up the complete content of the course.

• Single SCO

A single SCO is the most basic and most common form of a SCORM course. All files that make up the course, regardless of the number of lessons in the course, are packaged as one SCO unit. When the course is launched within the Learning Management System, it communicates with the SCO.

• Multiple SCO

A multiple SCO is where a group of files within the course can be treated as an individual SCO but packaged together with other SCOs to comprise one course. For example, the files that comprise each lesson of a SCORM course can be grouped together so that each lesson is a SCO in its own right and all the SCOs will comprise the one course.

Course Installation

For the course to be available in the Learning Management System, the SCORM package needs to be installed on the system. The method of installation will vary from LMS to LMS but will typically go through the following steps:

1. The manifest file will be located and interpreted.

2. The course identified in the manifest will be created in the Learning Management System and the course properties will be populated with the values defined in the manifest. These properties may include course name, creator, etc.

3. The lessons of the course will be created in the LMS and the lesson properties will be populated with the values defined in the manifest. Lesson properties would include information such as the path to the lesson file, passing grade, etc.

The Learning Management System should provide a facility to overwrite an already existing SCORM course so that if updates are made to the existing course, an installation will deploy those changes.

Course Communication

Initialization

When the course is launched within its run time environment, which for our purposes is the LMS, it will detect the existence of the API and attempt to make initial communication with the Learning Management System. This is a one-time handshake to ensure that communication has been established. The SCORM course is responsible for locating the API in the child browser session that it has launched in from the parent. The API is typically deployed using JavaScript. The API call that the course uses to do this is the LMSInitialize call. When the Learning Management System receives this API message call from the course, the LMS will initialize and respond to inform the course that communication has been established. An object model has been created in memory and the properties have been initialized to default values.

Intermediary Course Communication

Once the course has been launched and initialized with the LMS, the interaction between the two is determined by the course. It will use LMSGetValue and LMSSetValue API message calls to retrieve or populate data in the object model. Bear in mind that the object model exists in memory and has not been sent to the Learning Management System.

When the course needs to write the data so it exists in the database, it will send the API message LMSCommit. The LMSCommit will be received by the Learning Management System and the data stored to the LMS. The course developer will determine when an LMSCommit is required and it will be sent to the LMS when the event is activated. This could be at the end of each lesson or it could be at the end of the course.

The LMSCommit is an optional message and does not require a response from the Learning Management System.

Finalization

When the course is completed, it will send an LMSFinish API message to the LMS. This may be triggered by an event in the course that activates the LMSFinish or it may be on the Unload event of the HTML page when the user closes the browser. The LMSFinish indicates to the LMS that the user has ended the course and any further communication between the two will be rejected. c. If logging is to file, is there a log file for each course, each user, or one large SCORM log file?

d. How is log data purged? When logging is stored in the database, how often is the table purged? Can the data be deleted or does it need to be archived? If logging is to a file, does the file build in size until it is manually renewed or does the logging mechanism have a trigger that automatically generates a new file? (If the file is left to grow too big, it becomes very impractical to open it in a text editor.)
